Don’t just do something, sit there
What is meditation? Is it you sitting in a quiet room with eyes closed trying to stop thinking? And perhaps getting annoyed at noises in the background or snapping at someone if your peace is interrupted?
Meditation is awareness from moment to moment. It is a living practice in the now. Try this for a meditation practice: Whatever happens you incorporate into your meditation and you surrender to it. If there is a noise or interruption, you acknowledge it. What is the most annoying thing about the interruption or noise? Is it that noise or is it your reaction? If you let go of the reaction, its just noise. There is nothing that does not become part of your meditation.
“There is no self to understand but only the thought which creates the self. When the brain is still, deliberately disciplined, it is not silent. The desire to have complete control of the brain so that there is no movement of thought is to achieve an end. It is like achieving something, which is the action of desire. So one has to understand if one wants to find out what is meditation, one has to enquire into desire” – Jiddu Krishnamurti
